Hill Top

Hill Top in Hawkshead is the 17th-century farmhouse where Beatrix Potter wrote many of her best-loved tales, now preserved by the National Trust. The house interior, filled with her furniture and paintings, is open to visitors but restricted to assistance dogs only. Dogs on leads are welcome in the cottage garden, where you can stroll among the flowers and paths that inspired Potter's illustrations.

The on-site car park is limited, so pre-booking your arrival slot is strongly advised. Accessible parking is available at the farmhouse itself. Opening hours are 10 am to 4 pm most days, with late closing at 5 pm on Fridays.

Seasonal access to nearby open spaces may also be available depending on the time of year. Hill Top makes a rewarding stop if you're touring the Lake District with your dog and want a taste of literary history without leaving them behind for the whole visit. The garden offers a peaceful break between walks and Hawkshead village is just a short distance away for more dog-friendly exploring.
