That’s our way of flagging the places that go further — beyond “dogs allowed”, with a genuinely warm welcome for dogs inside.

The Shakespeare Tavern is Bristol's longest-serving ale house, set within a beautiful Georgian building dating back to 1722 and steeped in dockside history. Once a busy inn for ship crews and warehouse workers, it still carries that sense of tradition, now paired with a more relaxed, family-friendly feel that makes it easy to settle into. Dogs are welcome inside, so nobody needs to do the pavement-waiting shuffle.

There's a strong all-round offering here, from classic pub food to a well-stocked bar with a wide range of beers, wines and spirits. Live music and quiz nights keep things ticking along, while the beer garden offers a quieter spot when you want to step outside.

Sitting close to the harbourside and Queen Square, it's a natural stop during a wander, with dogs padding in alongside you and finding their place as the pub hums along.
