The Portly Pig in Ripon is a characterful craft ale bar and bottle shop where dogs are welcome inside, making it a good stop for dog owners who like a venue with personality and proper beer. Open Wednesday to Sunday, it serves three rotating cask ales from smaller local breweries, five changing kegs, real cider and a thoughtful selection of craft beers, cans and bottles. Cold food platters are available Friday to Sunday, including cheese and meat boards, ploughman's and pies, and hot meals can be ordered from local restaurants for eating in. The bar has seating downstairs and more space upstairs in three rooms with mismatched furniture and art deco charm, plus a covered heated courtyard at the back.

For visitors with dogs, it adds a slightly different, more characterful option to a Ripon day out, especially if the aim is somewhere with local flavour rather than sameness. The venue was named CAMRA Pub of the Year 2026 for Harrogate and Ripon, recognised for high-quality beer, community focus and excellent service.

A good fit for curious humans, sociable dogs and outings that benefit from a little extra character.

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome inside, so nobody needs to do the pavement-waiting shuffle. Keep things calm and let your dog lean into charming companion energy rather than full local-celebrity mode.
