Dog-Friendly Scarborough

Last Updated:

9 Jul 2026

Scarborough combines two large bays, long promenades, clifftop paths and plenty of dog-friendly indoor stops across the resort. Dogs are excluded from the principal bathing sections of North Bay and South Bay between 1 May and 30 September, but substantial outer stretches remain available, particularly when the tide is out. The town is hilly and spread around the headland, so choosing one bay for the day is often more enjoyable than repeatedly hauling everyone between the castle, seafront and opposite side of town.

Are dogs allowed on Scarborough beach all year round?

+

Dogs are allowed on parts of Scarborough’s beaches, but seasonal restrictions apply between 1 May and 30 September in parts of South Bay and North Bay. North Yorkshire Council confirms dog control is in place in parts of Scarborough during those dates.

In South Bay, restrictions cover the busiest central beach area, while in North Bay they apply to the main bathing section. Local signage is important, especially because the usable dog-friendly sand can change a lot with the tide.

Outside the restriction period, Scarborough becomes much easier for beach walks with dogs. In summer, use the unrestricted sections, check signs when you arrive, and avoid assuming the whole beach is dog-friendly just because you can see other dogs nearby.

Is Scarborough a good place for a dog-friendly seaside day out?

+

Yes. Scarborough is a strong dog-friendly seaside choice because it gives you two bays, long promenades, harbour views, cafés, pubs and big coastal walks in one place.

South Bay is the busier, classic seaside side, with amusements, cafés, the harbour and arcades. North Bay tends to feel a little calmer and is useful if you want more space, especially outside peak times. You can also link the day with Peasholm Park, Marine Drive, the Cleveland Way, or a wider coastal walk if your dog has arrived in “expedition with snacks” mode.

It is a proper traditional seaside town, so summer weekends can be busy. For dogs who prefer calmer spaces, North Bay, Marine Drive and quieter clifftop sections usually work better than the busiest South Bay stretch.

Is Scarborough worth visiting with a dog on a rainy day?

+

Yes. Scarborough is one of the better Yorkshire coast towns for rainy dog days because you can switch between short seafront walks and indoor dog-friendly stops without the whole day collapsing into wet-sock theatre.

The promenades around South Bay and North Bay are useful for shorter sea-air walks between showers, and the town has plenty of cafés and pubs where dogs are welcome inside. Peasholm Park can still work for a gentler walk if the rain is light, although paths may be wet or muddy after heavier weather.

For a rainy Scarborough visit, keep it simple: short promenade loop, warm indoor stop, harbour wander, lunch, then another bay walk if the weather behaves. The dog will still think this is a premium holiday experience.

Is Scarborough easy to walk around with a dog?

+

Mostly yes, but Scarborough is hilly in places.

The seafront promenades are the easiest areas for dog walking because they are wide, scenic and fairly straightforward. South Bay, the harbour, North Bay and Marine Drive all work well for coastal wandering once you are down at sea level.

The town centre and routes between the bays can involve hills, steps and steeper streets, so it is worth planning around your dog’s age and energy levels. Older dogs may prefer staying around one bay rather than repeatedly climbing between the seafront and upper town.

Scarborough rewards a slower pace. Bay walk, coffee, hill negotiation, dramatic pause, repeat.

Where is the best place to park in Scarborough with a dog?

+

For South Bay, South Bay Underground Car Park on Foreshore Road is one of the most convenient options because it gives quick access to the beach, Spa, cafés, amusements and seafront.

For the town centre and South Bay area, Palm Court Car Park on Vernon Road is another useful option, close to the town centre, Foreshore, Spa Cliff Lift and South Bay.

For North Bay, look at parking around the North Bay seafront or Scalby Mills area, depending on whether you want beach access, Peasholm Park, or a quieter coastal walk. Scarborough also has Park and Ride sites at Seamer Road and Filey Road, with hundreds of free parking spaces, and dogs can travel on the bus at the driver’s discretion for a small charge.

In summer, arrive earlier if you want the easiest dog-friendly start. Scarborough gets busy, and nobody wants the first walk of the day to be a car park orbit.
