Southport with Dogs: A Seaside Weekend That Actually Works
Southport has all the ingredients for a very easy weekend with a dog: a huge sweep of coast, handsome streets made for wandering, green spaces when everyone needs a quieter hour and, crucially, plenty of places where dogs are welcome inside.
It also has enough to do that you really do not need to cram it all in.
This is a weekend for arriving gently, giving Saturday to one proper seaside day and saving Sunday for a slower potter around one of Southport's prettiest corners.
Friday: Lord Street and a First Look at Southport
Friday is best kept simple.
Start with a wander around the centre and Lord Street, where Southport feels rather grander than the average seaside town. There are shops, cafés and plenty to look at, but no need to turn arrival afternoon into a sightseeing challenge.
Season Coffee, Bar & Kitchen is a particularly good place to land. It sits in the Market Quarter and combines speciality coffee with lunch, drinks and a relaxed independent feel. Dogs are welcome inside, so it works just as well for a coffee as it does for the moment when coffee quietly becomes something stronger.
Later, head towards Marine Lake and The Lakeside Inn.
It has the rather magnificent claim of being Britain's smallest pub. Dogs are welcome inside too, which does raise the possibility that one enthusiastic spaniel could materially alter the available floor space.

Saturday: A Proper Southport Seaside Day
Saturday belongs to Adventure Coast Southport.
Set on Marine Drive, this is Southport's big traditional amusement-park day out, with rides and attractions spread across the outdoor site. What makes it unusually useful for a dog-friendly weekend is that well-behaved dogs are welcome throughout the park grounds on leads.
They cannot go on the rides, understandably. A Labrador on a roller coaster feels like paperwork nobody needs.
But dogs can explore the park with you while the humans dip in and out of the attractions, which means the day does not have to be divided into dog people and ride people.
And there is no need to add another attraction afterwards. This is the Saturday.
Spend as much or as little time on the rides as suits your group. Wander Marine Drive, embrace the full seaside atmosphere and allow the day to unfold without feeling that you should also be visiting a nature reserve, a stately home and three parks before dinner.
For the evening, Occulo Lounge on Lord Street makes an easy choice. It serves food and drinks into the evening and dogs are welcome inside, with exactly the sort of relaxed café-bar atmosphere that works when everyone has spent the day outdoors and nobody needs dinner to become another event.
Saturday achieved. No clipboard required.
Sunday: Churchtown and the Botanic Gardens
Sunday belongs to the quieter side of Southport.
Head to Churchtown for a wander around Southport Botanic Gardens, a green space that has been part of the area since the 19th century.
Dogs are welcome on leads, and the gardens offer lawns, colourful planting, a lake and plenty of paths for a gentle final-day stroll.
This is not a Sunday for racking up steps. It is a potter.
And conveniently, Botanic Road Eatery is close by in Churchtown. Dogs are welcome inside, and the café and restaurant serves lunch and coffee in a bright, contemporary setting.
That makes for a particularly civilised final combination: gardens, lunch, perhaps another little wander around Churchtown and then home when you are ready.
No last-minute attraction has been shoehorned in. Nobody needs to race across town because a blog told them Sunday was incomplete without one final educational experience.
