A dog-friendly weekend in Hereford: indoor welcomes guaranteed

Hereford has a genuine claim on a dog-friendly weekend — river walks, a National Trust garden and a moated estate that deserves a proper Sunday. What sets it apart, though, is the indoor welcome. Every café, pub and restaurant named in this itinerary confirms dogs inside, which means nobody ends up stationed on the pavement while the rest of the group orders.

The shape is simple: Friday arrival and the River Wye, Saturday anchored entirely on The Weir Garden, Sunday spent at Brockhampton before heading home. The out-of-city venues all require a car, so plan your routes before each stage.

Friday: arrive and find the river

The most natural first move after arriving is a walk along the River Wye to Castle Green. The public green space beside the river asks nothing of you except a lead and some time — low-pressure, easy to navigate and the right speed for a Friday evening. It gives the dog a proper sniff around and gives you a feel for the city before anything else begins.

Castle Green and Cafe sits on the riverside with a roof terrace overlooking the Wye, and dogs are welcome inside on a lead. Supper runs from 3pm to 9pm on Friday and Saturday evenings, with the menu built around local and seasonal produce from growers and producers in the area — globally inspired dishes that change to reflect what's available. If you arrive earlier in the day, the kitchen also covers breakfast and lunch. There's no on-site parking at the venue itself; 30-minute street parking is available on Castle Street and St Ethelbert Street.

Saturday: The Weir Garden

National Trust — The Weir Garden is the whole of Saturday. The waymarked walk covers a mile of riverside parkland with sweeping views of the River Wye and the Herefordshire countryside, with narrow paths through the riverside garden section opening out into wider parkland. It's the kind of route where a curious nose stays fully occupied and the humans don't need to be anywhere else.

Dogs are welcome throughout the parkland and gardens on leads for the entire visit — there are no off-lead areas. The estate has sheep and cattle, so close control matters at every point. The River Wye here is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which means dogs must stay out of the water. Water bowls are at the welcome kiosk and by the toilets; waste bins are near the toilets and at the end of the walk.

If you want dinner after the estate, The Bookshop is worth considering. It runs an evening menu Wednesday to Saturday with a charcoal-fired oven at the centre of the kitchen, and dogs are welcome inside in the bar-restaurant area with high tables and the heated patio. The main restaurant area is dog-free, so mention that when you arrive. The evening menu starts at 6pm.

Sunday: Brockhampton

National Trust — Brockhampton is the right way to finish a weekend in this part of Herefordshire. The estate takes you through orchards, woodland and rolling parkland, with the kind of variety that shifts the walk along without it feeling designed. One minute you're under tree cover; the next you're out in open fields with big Herefordshire views, then drifting past the moated manor as though you've accidentally wandered into a period drama.

Dogs are welcome across the estate, woods and parkland on leads throughout, with close control required near livestock and deer. The manor house is people-only. There's outdoor café seating on site for a pause between walks, though there's no confirmed indoor dog access at the café.

Two free car parks are on site. The Lower Brockhampton car park is nearest to the manor house and has Blue Badge spaces. The estate and grounds are open daily; the manor house opens Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays, though it opens on Bank Holidays.

Food and drink: the wider picture

Dogs are welcome inside on a lead. Food runs Wednesday to Saturday from noon until 8pm, and Sunday roasts are served from 12:30pm to 4pm.

Imperial Inn Hereford welcomes dogs inside throughout the whole venue. Breakfast is served Tuesday to Saturday from 9am and Sunday from 10am, both until midday. Lunch and dinner run daily — useful when plans change and you need a reliable fallback without having to think too hard about whether the dog is welcome.

For brunch, Dough opens Monday to Friday from 9am to 3:30pm, Saturday until 4pm and Sunday from 10am to 3pm, with dogs welcome inside on a lead and the menu built around seasonal Herefordshire ingredients.
